This photograph shows the ninth and final sector of the vacuum vessel of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) hanging on cranes as it is delivered from the Plantijngracht ship, in Fos-sur-Mer industrial harbour, on September 22, 2026. This piece, weighing nearly 600 tonnes, is the last of the "Super Heavy Exceptionnal Load" (SHEL), that will be delivered to complete the hermetic enclosure of the reactor. Thirty-five nations are collaborating in the ITER nuclear fusion research project, aimed at mastering energy production from hydrogen fusion, as in the heart of the sun, a potential new source of carbon-free and non-polluting energy.
