This photograph shows smoke rising from a small fire smoldering in the ashes of a tree following a wildfire in Montfort-sur-Argens, southeastern France on August 1, 2026. In the Var department of south eastern France, the fire in the Gros Bessillon massif has flared up again and "grown in intensity," announced local prefect. The flames have swept across 1,000 hectares in six hours. This fire had been brought under control four days ago, after devastating 4,500 hectares.
