This photograph shows burnt trees in front of a house spared by the wildfire in Montfort-sur-Argens, southeastern France on August 1, 2026. In the Var department of south eastern France, the fire in the Gros Bessillon massif has flared up again and "grown in intensity," announced local prefect. The flames have swept across 1,000 hectares in six hours. This fire had been brought under control four days ago, after devastating 4,500 hectares. Forests catch fire all the more easily because the vegetation and soils have been extremely dry for months, a phenomenon exacerbated by climate change and the recent exceptional heatwaves.
